Communicating the history, heritage and the people of Snowdonia
Youth Hostel Association
YHA is a charity set-up in the 1930s with a clear mission, to inspire all, especially young people, to broaden their horizons gaining knowledge and independence through new experiences of adventure and discovery. With over 200 Youth Hostels and 200,000 members, since 2011 they have been working hard in refurbishing their hostels across the UK. We’ve been working with them having been appointed as their design agency in Wales, which has been really fun experience: visiting building sites and understanding the changes that YHA are making to their hostels. As part of the nationwide refurbishment their hostel at the foot of Snowdon, know as Pen-y-Pass has undergone major investment. As part of this investment we were asked to help them tell the stories of Snowdonia and the people that to contributed it's history. We created a series of interpretation panels, that mixed information graphics covering statistics about the National Park with stories of history, heritage and the people of Snowdonia. A series of infographics dawn the walls of a new education room with key facts about Snowdonia, along with a wall dedicated to the families and faces of people spanning the history of the region. The panels have received great feedback from the Youth Hostel Association’s project leader and we hope the Young People staying at the centre this summer with leave with a snippet of Snowdon’s history.
