Communicating the history, heritage and fun facts about Cardiff.
Youth Hostel Association
YHA is a charity set-up in the 1930s with a clear mission, to inspire all, especially young people, to broaden their horizons gaining knowledge and independence through new experiences of adventure and discovery.
With over 200 Youth Hostels and 200,000 members, since 2011 they have been working hard in refurbishing their hostels across the UK. We’ve been working with them having been appointed as their design agency in Wales, which has been a really fun experience: visiting building sites and understanding the changes that YHA are making to their hostels.
As part of the nationwide refurbishment YHA relocated to a bigger and better building in central Cardiff. As part of the relocation we were asked to come up with an idea of how Cardiff could be represented, the answer, a very very big illustration of course.
Working with illustrators Matt Joyce and Emma Tickner we created an illustration that covered facts about Cardiff, from the Romans to the history of the docks, we made sure everyone who walked into the hostel learnt a bit about Cardiff.
This was not all about learning the history of Cardiff. Two walls were dedicated to learning the funny idioms of the Welsh language and useful Welsh phrases you can use during your stay.
